Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS tested on EOS 450D

Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS tested on EOS 450D -
Despite its low price, the EOS 450D is a very capable camera, performing almost on par with its more advanced siblings. Thanks to new technological advances, camera prices continue to drop although image quality increase. In lenses, however, low price and high performance is an impossible combination.

The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS is mainly targeted buyers of the EOS 450D, as well as earlier models in the low-end EOS series. For these byuers, small size, low weight and reasonable price are definately attractive issues. The drawbacks are lower lens speed and poorer performance.

Both the EOS 450D standard zoom lens, the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, and this new supplementary telephoto zoom lens, the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS, fail to meet the camera's high image quality standards. The EOS 450D deserves better lenses than this pair. Although most of our measurements show rather modest performances, many amateurs will probably not be able to see it - or care.
